Mirena IUD Pseudotumor Cerebri Lawsuits
Trusted Dangerous Drug Attorneys Serving Clients Nationwide
Mirena IUDs have been linked to a serious health condition called pseudotumor cerebri (PTC). While PTC is most common among overweight or obese women, recent studies have been able to show that it occurs more frequently in such women who have used a Mirena IUD. It is believed the hormone LNG, which is predominant in Mirena IUDs, is largely responsible for the increased risk of PTC. In 2002, a similar product called Norplant was pulled from markets after it was determined that its high LNG levels were causing users to suffer from pseudotumor cerebri, which acts like a brain tumor without the actual formation of one.
Symptoms of PTC, which can be temporary or permanent, include:
- Chronic headaches
- Tinnitus with each heartbeat
If you have used a Mirena IUD and have since suffered PTC symptoms or been diagnosed with PTC, you may be able to seek compensation from the device manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Jackson Allen & Williams, LLP and our pseudotumor cerebri lawsuit attorneys are currently managing claims for Mirena IUD users who have suffered serious health consequences in relation to using the birth control implant. Treatments for Pseudotumor Cerebri Caused by Mirena IUD
Pseudeotumor cerebri – known as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) in certain medical journals and diagnoses – is the result of an unnatural and dangerous buildup of cerebrospinal fluid towards the front of the brain. Over time, the buildup will become severe enough to cause pressure, which pinches optic nerves and can trigger migraines and vision loss. PTC has no known cure at this time.
Treatments that may alleviate but not cure PTC include:
- Prescriptions of diuretic medicine, which may cause side effects of its own.
- Spinal surgery, such as lumbar-peritoneal shunt placement.
- Brain surgery, specifically procedures that can drain cerebrospinal fluid.
- Significant weight loss.
Many treatment options for pseudotumor cerebri are hopeful or experimental at best, and most can be quite expensive. A patient could potentially require multiple treatment sessions spread across many years since a complete cure is not known. The end cost could be great and should not fall upon the patient to cover, but instead on the liable party, the manufacturer of Mirena IUD.
Holding Bayer Pharmaceuticals Accountable for Defective Drugs
Dozens of lawsuits around the country have been filed against Bayer Pharmaceuticals for the increased risk of pseudotumor cerebri linked to Mirena IUD usage. The cases are still going through the legal process due to the recentness of the filings but most reference or cite Bayer's failure to warn patients and doctors of the real dangers caused by Mirena IUD, namely PTC. This is not the first time that the pharmaceutical giant has been harshly criticized for misleading advertisements and drug information. In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued two official warnings to Bayer for distributing unclear or falsified claims about the Mirena IUD product.
If it can be shown through investigative research and perhaps courtroom arguments that PTC is certainly caused by Mirena IUDs – and that Bayer should have given more warning about that risk – the plaintiffs in these lawsuits could be awarded significant compensation. Many of the Mirena IUD pseudotumor cerebri lawsuits cite medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and heightened risk of further injury as damages in the claim.
